The Halloween Shadow

Halloween fell on Saturday this one year. The year the sky turned red. It was as if the sky was on fire. The wind was strong and warm, very unusual for this time of year. Everyone didn't seem to mind because they were preparing for the festivities. Most folk were planning for the costume party held at the local school. In this town everyone knew one another, except for the new family who just moved in. The Warner's, Mr., Mrs., and Robert, their twelve-year-old son. They were church going, so they didn't fancy themselves participating on this night, Halloween night. As most people passed their house on the way to the school, they gave a friendly hello. Robert was very enthused by the idea he might be going. But as most families passed and the streets became vacant. Robert saw no future in entertaining the idea anymore. The skies opened and a shadow, darker than dark filled the streets and entered into the school. Robert ran down the street toward the school and listened. It was so quiet he can hear the breathing of his own chest. He got closer to look and when he peered in the window, no one was there. Everyone was gone. As Robert tried to run the shadow circled him, as if to engulf him. Then a voice screamed out. I'll be back for you!
